Image Metadata Viewer & Remover

Inspect embedded metadata in JPG, PNG and WebP photos. Remove GPS tags, choose sensitive metadata categories, or clear embedded metadata before downloading a separate copy.

Removing orientation (including through Other EXIF/XMP/IPTC) or color profiles can change how viewers display the image. The main image pixels are not re-encoded. A visible location in the picture is not removed.

Image metadata: inspect camera tags before sharing a photo

A picture can contain details that are not visible in its pixels: camera information, creator fields or GPS coordinates. This tool inspects JPG, PNG and WebP metadata and lets you choose GPS-only removal or broader embedded-metadata removal.

How to view image metadata and remove GPS tags

  1. Select the original photo

Upload one JPG, PNG or WebP up to 30 MB and 50 million pixels. The metadata report appears automatically; inspect the fields rather than assuming every photo contains GPS.

  2. Choose the removal scope

GPS-only removal targets recognized GPS tags. Embedded-metadata removal is broader and can remove creator tags, orientation hints and color profiles as well.

  3. Check the cleaned download

Download the separate copy, open it and re-upload that copy if you want to inspect its remaining tags. Keep the original somewhere appropriate when its camera or copyright information matters.

GPS-only versus embedded-metadata removal

PropertyRemove GPS onlyRemove embedded metadata
Recognized GPS tagsRemoved.Included in the broader removal.
Other descriptive tagsNormally retained, including creator information.Targets embedded EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata.
Orientation and color profilesNot deliberately stripped by the GPS-only action.May be removed, which can change display orientation or colors.
Visible location cluesNot removed. Not removed; faces, street signs and addresses remain in the pixels.

Choose the right workflow

Share a photo without camera GPS

Choose GPS-only removal when you want to keep other metadata. Look for nonstandard location text too; recognized GPS tags are not the only possible location clue.

Clean tags without shrinking the photo

ExifTool edits metadata without re-encoding image pixels. If you also need fewer bytes for an upload, compress a separate copy and check the image quality afterwards.

Check these things before trying again

No GPS fields appear

The source may never have contained them, or an earlier editor may have removed them. Absence of GPS tags does not mean the picture or its other text fields reveal no location.

The cleaned picture looks rotated or different

Broader removal can remove orientation and color profiles without changing encoded pixels. Review the output in your usual viewer; choose GPS-only removal if keeping those display hints is important.

Processing, privacy and the original file

Inspection and removal use local ExifTool on the LoveMyFiles server. Temporary copies are deleted after each request; a cleaned copy is returned directly. Metadata removal is not anonymization: visible personal information, filenames and unusual location fields can remain. Review both the report and the picture before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

Does this change the photo pixels?

ExifTool edits metadata without re-encoding the image pixels. Removing orientation or color profiles may change display behavior.

Does GPS removal hide all location information?

No. It removes recognized GPS metadata tags, not visible locations or arbitrary location text in other fields. Use embedded-metadata removal when you also want EXIF, IPTC and XMP removed.

Can I remove previews or profiles while keeping creator tags?

Choose metadata categories, then select Embedded previews or Color profile. Unselected categories are kept where ExifTool supports editing them separately. The downloaded copy is scanned again; read-only or unsupported fields may remain.

What does Other EXIF/XMP/IPTC remove?

It targets detected EXIF, XMP and IPTC fields outside the other categories, including comments, descriptions and orientation. It does not broadly delete those metadata blocks. Required, read-only and unsupported fields can remain and are included in the output scan.

Why might a cleaned photo look rotated or differently colored?

Embedded-metadata removal can remove orientation hints and color profiles. The encoded image pixels are not re-encoded, but a viewer can display them differently without those hints.
